Codes, Permits & Ordinances

One great advantage to doing business in El Dorado and Union County is the time it takes to complete the permit process. It generally only takes around 7 days!

Whether you are looking to build a new facility or renovate an existing structure inside El Dorado city limits, a permit will be required for most work.

Permits are required for the following work on any property:

  • Demolition
  • Construction (New and Remodel)
  • Renovation (excluding paint and flooring)
  • HVAC Systems
  • Electrical Systems
  • Plumbing Systems
  • Signs, Awnings, and Fences

Permits require documented cost estimate for the total project. Additional information may be required including but not limited to:

  • Survey of the property
  • Approved plumbing plans by the Arkansas Department of Health Division of Plumbing
  • Certified Architect Plans

All work must be performed by a licensed contractor when required by state law. All Contractors must be licensed with the City of El Dorado.

The City has adopted the Arkansas Fire Prevention Code. Building projects and renovations must comply with this statewide code, even in rural and unincorporated areas.  The El Dorado Fire Department is responsible for approving permits, compliance inspections, and issuing a Certificate of Occupancy once the project is completed. Contact the Fire Marshal’s Division for guidance on code requirements:

If you are looking to build outside El Dorado city limits, you do not have to have a building permit nor a business license. The state fire marshal’s office should be contacted in unincorporated areas concerning compliance with the Arkansas Fire Prevention Code.
